Program Reflection
My Path to Instructional Technology
Throughout my professional journey, I have been driven by a passion for empowering others to achieve their goals and thrive in their careers. As I contemplated my future aspirations, the path became clear: I needed to enhance my skills in a way that would enable me to have a broader, more profound impact. This notion led me to the Master's program in Instructional Technology and Design at the University of Alabama. Little did I know that enrolling in this program would prove to be more than just an ideal fit; it has not only equipped me with the tools to create impactful learning experiences but has also seamlessly aligned with my other interests in creative design, project management, and technology—transforming my professional aspirations into a fulfilling career trajectory.
Academic Insights and Professional Applications
The curriculum of this program has significantly enhanced my professional skill set and broadened my perspectives in numerous ways. The courses on evaluation and project management have been particularly beneficial in my current role as a technical writer in knowledge management. These courses equipped me with the tools to assess the effectiveness of learning programs and manage projects efficiently, ensuring that knowledge dissemination within my organization is both strategic and impactful. The course on Issues and Trends in Instructional Technology, which focused on the rise of generative AI, was instrumental during a period when AI technologies became increasingly accessible to the public. It covered crucial aspects such as the ethical and legal considerations of using AI-generated content, including text, images, video, and audio. Learning about these guidelines has been essential in ensuring that as an instructional designer, I utilize AI responsibly and effectively. My opportunity to complete an internship as a learning technologist allowed me to step outside my usual professional environment and apply my growing knowledge in a new context. This hands-on experience was invaluable in solidifying my understanding and practical skills.
Advocate for Accessibility and Inclusivity
The most influential course I took focused on Assistive Technology for individuals with disabilities and unique needs. This course introduced me to the principles of universal design, and I have become an advocate for applying these guidelines to ensure educational environments are accessible to all learners. This approach has also shaped my broader outlook on inclusivity beyond just educational settings. My advocacy for accessibility has impacted my professional life, driving me to strive for inclusivity in all aspects of my design work. I now prioritize creating learning experiences that cater to diverse learners, taking into account their different abilities, backgrounds, and needs. This has not only made me a more effective instructional technologist and designer but has also allowed me to collaborate with colleagues and clients in a deeper and more meaningful way, fostering a culture of respect and accessibility.
Personal and Professional Growth
Throughout my tenure in the Master's program at the University of Alabama, I have undergone substantial personal and professional growth. The program challenged and expanded my thought processes, compelling me to approach problems with a more analytical and innovative mindset. My problem-solving abilities have been significantly honed, influenced by the rigorous coursework and collaborative projects that demanded creative and practical solutions. On the professional front, I have become more adept at integrating technology in ways that enhance learning outcomes, recognizing the potential of digital tools to transform educational environments. This has involved not only employing new technologies but also rethinking how technology can be utilized to make learning more inclusive and accessible. These developments in my approach have not only made me a better instructional designer but also a more thoughtful advocate for technology's role in education, preparing me to lead and innovate in an ever-evolving field.
